I buy almost everything that I don’t buy locally online…usually at Amazon (for better or worse.) But this switch, I actually bought it at the Apple Store. I should have looked on Amazon though, because about 25% of the people that reviewed it gave it only one star.
I bought the Belkin WeMo Switch to control electronics in Florence remotely. Maybe a heater… I wasn’t fully sure what. But I was sure of one thing. It was really complicated to set up. After two days of unreliable and spotty connection, I finally gave up.
I don’t say that lightly. I am very tech savvy, and spent about 12 hours trying to get this thing online and working. The set up method is archaic, and requires you to connect to the switch itself as a hotspot. Fine. But the iPhone app leaves quite a bit to be desired. After one full evening of working to get it connected, it finally worked… for about 30 minutes. Then it decided to update firmware in the switch… and never came back online. That’s when I gave up.
From reading the reviews on Amazon, I can see that I am not alone in this experience. A great idea, with lots of potential but not quite there yet.
